Also, if he should stay in BN, will he just retire as the date of the GE gets closer if he is not chosen as a candidate?

No, the likelihood of him joining the PR is already over and done with.

If he ever comes back to the bench of government, he must be given a worthy senior post.

Will PM Najib accede to this?

As for the PR if they should win Putrajaya, they might just secure his willingness to participate in a government  renaissance through a senatorship if he is willing.
