Trial Teaching of Homeschoolers

Avinesh, Joey and Company

Who are home-schoolers?

They are students whose parents have decided not to send them to the national mainstream school system.

Parents have three pathways to choose.

Send the children to international school.

Send the children to private school .

Or send them to home school.

While the international schoolers will pursue the International Baccalaureate qualification, private schools will still pursue national mainstream examinations but with a fillip towards doing other international examinations.

For the home-schoolers, they will use any established teaching curriculum and then programme themselves at their own pace to sit for the IGCSE examinations of the UK.

Those pursuing the IGCSE can apply for a local university to continue with their tertiary education-Universiti Sains Malaysia.

I started teaching English to my 7 home-schoolers in the last two weeks of June.

It is now mid July and I have done my assessment of their English level.

From next week, they will move to compound and complex sentence building.

No more simple sentence construction, per se.

Tip of the Iceberg?

This titanic iceberg  downed the Titanic

We always hear the figurative use of the phrase," Tip of the Iceberg".

Do we know exactly what is the tip and what of the rest of it?

This photo shows you the true massive size of an iceberg.

From top to bottom, it is awesome!

This photo came from a rig manager for Global Marine Drilling in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Canada.

They actually have to divert the path of these things away from the oil rig by towing them with ships!

Anyway, in this particular case the water was calm and the sun was almost directly overhead.

So that the diver was able to get into the water and click this picture.

The estimated  weight of this iceberg is 300 million tons!

A Night at the Museum

Excitement at the Penang Museum
Remembered the Ben Stiller movie, "The Night at the Museum" and all those things can came alive after the doors closed from the public at night?

Incidentally, for me, I am teaching Note Expansion for Std 5 and Std 6 pupils and one of the topic I intend to teach was exactly this topic.

So, when I read today's online STAR about the event they approved for the public to stay overnight at the Penang Museum, I just had to blog on this one.

The event was dubbed, A Night at 57, Macalister which is the street address of the museum. Anyone can apply to join the first ever hair-raising slumber party of the museum premise. Forty people join this firs-ever sleep over at the museum.

Before going to bed, they will be shown a host of horror movies, be given a ghost story telling session as well as a sketch on a childbirth in progress enacted by the museum staff.

Why the childbirth enactment, you may ask? That is because the museum was the former King Edward V11 Maternity Hospital where nearly 60,000 babies were delivered. Then the Japanese used it as a naval hospital during their occupation of Malaya. Subsequently, when the British came back, they used it as military barracks before turning it back again into a hospital. In 1955, it ceased being a hospital once more.

The St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross Society then moved in; followed by the Center for Penang NGOs. Then it was left vacant for two years before being turned into the Penang Museum.

This 99-year old museum is replete with all types of ghostly tales. CCTV footage has shown closing doors, shifting chairs, strange flying lights and sounds of heavy breathing at the mortuary.

The participants arrived with sleeping bags, torch lights and other personal essentials. They were served a buffet dinner using hospital-type trays.

When darkness fell, the group were split into smaller groups and given a tour of the various parts of the museum including the mortuary and post-mortem facility. Incidentally both these facilities were gutted in a mysterious fire two months before this overnight stay event.

The next morning, the participants were woken up to take part in a treasure hunt. One of the participants apparently felt someone touching her shoulder when she was given a tour of the pantry last night.

Due to the success of this pilot overnight stay, more of such events will be organised in the future.

Interestingly, all the participants were given practical advice before participating in the overnight museum stay.

Here are some of them.

When you need to go to the toilet, bring along a friend. Otherwise you risk bringing back 'two phantom friends'.

When you take a shower, always keep one piece of clothing on.

Watch what you say and no brave claims of gung-ho bravery

Poor English: Weak Teachers, Weak Students

He may Make a Good English Teacher

This is a summary of an article that appeared in the Malaysian Insider on 7 April 2014.

Study after study have confirmed this deteriorating standard of English in our schools. In fact, you do not need to conduct any more studies as it will just benefit  consulting groups like Cambridge.

What is needed is an intensification of efforts in the teaching and learning of English.

Teaching English grammar as well as vocabulary expansion is a must.

Also, making scoring at least a credit in English mandatory at the SPM level  is one concrete way  towards this direction.

The local politicians, particularly the Cabinet, must have a will of steel to steer the national education system so that English will find back its pristine position as in the past.

Additionally, all English teachers  must go through continuous refresher courses and only those who passed out well can be allowed to teach English.

As an added motivation, such teachers should be paid exemplary cash incentives.

Let us look at this article on the findings of this most recent study done by the government on the status of English in our schools.

" Monday, 7 April 2014

In a reply to Parliament, Deputy Education Minister, P Kamalanathan stated that a study commissioned by the government has shown that the English proficiency of the majority of both students and teachers had a weak command of the language,

This study, conducted by the Cambridge English Language Assessment on the teaching and learning of English in Malaysian schools has found out  that a majority of the students did not improve their basic level of English especially  skills. As for the teachers, their weakness in speaking skills had prevented them in the improvement of teaching pedagogy.
Carried out last year, this baseline project conducted by the Cambridge Group took place in  476 schools, involving 31,000 students and 1,000 teachers. In this study, teachers and students were tested through questionnaires and face-to-face interviews so as to gauge their English proficiency.
It was reported earlier in The Star that only 37% of English teachers in primary schools had high English proficiency.
The  deputy minister also discovered that the co—curriculum and assessments of schools did not conform to international standards focusing on only reading and writing than on communication and listening.

As such, as a follow-up, a special committee will be set up to evaluate the findings and to obtain  feedback from various quarters, including related non-governmental organisations on how to improve the standard of English in the country."

Bad Spelling Can Be Deadly

Mortally Wounding

Bad spelling can indeed be deadly!

This example exemplifies it.

A man received a text from his Indian neighbour ...

"Sorry sir, I am using your wife with no permission...

I am using day and night ...

I am using when you are not present at home....

In fact I using more than you using.....

I confess this because now I feel very much guilt...

Hope you will accept my sincere apologies "

...... Distraught, the man shot his wife.......

A few minutes later he received another text:

Sorry sir, spelling mistake ... wifi not wife.

English-Saucily Abused?

Funnily Abused, that is

English is indeed the universal language; be it for education, communication and especially entertainment of many sorts.

Its universal usage however has led to all kinds of misconstrued use, some laughably funny and has indeed became saucy for unimaginable fun.

And that is why expressive grammar English and appropriate precise vocabulary is paramount!

Here goes:

Cannot Teach English!

Malaysia Boleh!
It appears that in Malaysia, teachers can be trained miraculously on an ad-hoc basis and then can be considered competent  to teach that subject to students.

All you need in some short term exposure courses and walla! Malaysia boleh!

This is apart from those that have formal training to teach English of which 70% failed miserably to perform.

Endless Possibilities!

This first person reports of the inadequacies felt by some teachers is truly frigthening.

Read on!

While parents decry the low standard of English among teachers, some lecturers lament that they were “cheated” by the way they were trained.
Devi, for instance, chose to make teaching a career about eight years ago.
Her pride in graduating as a teacher quickly disappeared after her first few weeks in the classroom as she taught English to the students.
Devi discovered a significant gap in ability between her and them.
“Some speak much better English than I do, especially those from the better classes.
“It really affected my confidence,” she recalled.
“How can I teach these students when they know more than I do?
“I felt let down by my education and training; I felt so unprepared,” said Devi, who only opted to teach English while she was enrolled in her teacher training course, and appears to have quite a good command of the language.
“It was embarrassing at first when I mispronounced words and got my tenses wrong, and my better students corrected me.
“Now I look at it as a learning experience, and I just have to keep trying to improve myself,” she said.
Another is Zeti. With English not being her teacher training option, Zeti felt lost when she was asked to teach the language in her school.
“I can communicate fairly well in the language, but I’m definitely not trained to teach it.
“A few in-service courses here and there only helped a bit,” she pointed out.
“It’s really frustrating to hear complaints about how bad we (teachers) are when people don’t acknowledge the kind of challenges we face.
“I’m good at what I was trained in, but suddenly I’m expected to be an expert in another area overnight – how can I stay motivated?”
Meanwhile, experienced English teacher Gina opted to undergo a masters programme at a private university in the hopes of expanding her teaching skills.
“I wanted to learn more about the methodology of language teaching, but I didn’t feel like I was learning anything new. In fact, a short course I went for on my own time had more to offer.
“But how many teachers have the time to do this?

“It’s one thing to have a good command of English, but teaching is a different ball-game altogether.”

Future Impossible Tense-Is This Applicable to Malaysia?

This a new tense we will have to grapple in jest in Malaysia; what with the kind of perception about corruption in Malaysia.

What a laugh!
A grammarian will really be in stitches about the newly  minted future impossible tense.

Only in Malaysia?

Malaysia Boleh!

Why Google Translate Misleads.

I have translated and ENglish text using Googgle Translate.

Look for yourself, how the meaning is lost.

Establishment of educational institutions is a noble effort in designating penggarapan process. Knowledge and formal research universities of the earliest in the history of the world such as Al-Azhar Palencia Bologna, Oxford Cambridge and the University of Naples. In 1224, the world's oldest public university was built by the world's earliest civilizations based one purpose - as a center of educational research ideas and learning delivery and the development of knowledge through the medium of writing. This reality is totally contradictory to the purpose of the establishment of most universities today that seem transformed into institutional graduation recognition and most unfortunate that as a business rooted in profit. Ibn Khaldun sociological and economic historians figure in his article was a remark Prolegomenon submit the following people is a platform to achieve sovereignty and strength of a country's strength comes from economic prosperity built by human capital development. Development education can only be achieved through justice and inclusiveness for all. Aristotle also suggested that "Education should be a single and equal for all". A system that practices discrimination in education based on the ability of the economy will menatijahkan imbalance in the quality of human capital and workforce that will become the backbone of society. Both the above argument is the thesis of the article this.

Does Re-training Help Jobless Graduates?

Wahlau, Such English!
As usual, the government claims that almost all their students in the SL1M programme got a job on leaving it.

Pray tell, what jobs?

We don't want any mickey mousing? Comprede?

Also, do a transparent tracker study and see how many were retained by their employers.

Wahlau! Such Spelling!
While the government trumpets in cacophony , the private sector are more muted in their responses.

A Malay legal firm tells about poor communication skills, particularly in English, among these graduates and once they do not contribute effectively to the firm, they will be given the walking papers.

How man? No Speak English; No Job!
Again, how many of them will be underemployed, using their lesser certificates to get jobs at fast food joints and 24-hour convenient stores?

Yes, also GLCs may be forced to accept them as national or social service.

I see almost a whole generation who will be English-deficient. Many thanks to the myopic politicians we have.

So,who are we kidding?

SL1M is so slim! So are its possible chances of success.

Verdict: Shockingly sickening!

Home Tuition-Early Signs of Progress

Tuition for Students

I must be having bad to mediocre students.

I could be having undisciplined learners who are difficult to teach.

Or may I am just unlucky to be saddled with lazy bums as my students.

Looking back at my teaching history, there was some joy when I taught voluntarily for the church.

During my Berjaya University College days, I like most of the students because they do try hard.

The Form Four student was an uninterested and disinterested student. She left on her own accord.

My stint at the tuition center at Section 14 was just bad luck since I was saddled with a class more than 40 students which was pretty hard to control.

At Aman Suria, I felt the students being rich spoiled brats, were not there to learn but to socialise.

For my students at home, the first brother and sister pair was just incorrigible as they were rich kids and think that it was the job of their parents to leave them a legacy even if they are poor in their studies. Thankfully they got out on their own.

The second brother and sister pair were again rich kids from an international school and the brother was from a  private school. They possibly wanted me to go to their house to teach. Failing which they got another teacher. Que sera sera.

My current stint with a tuition center is manageable as the classes are small. Only issue-they pay a paltry sum and waste my week-ends.

I had this two sisters who also came to the house for tuition. The first is now in college while the second is still under my tutelage.

I see improvement particularly in her writing skills though she has still  has to improve on her vocabulary.

Abracadabra!

Tender mercies.

Some good feelings at last.

Heir Conditioning-Technology Deficient

Before the air con

M Shanmughalingam's simple poem, Heir Conditioning  perturbs me much.

It has only two stanzas.

The first stanza is that of an inquiring grandchild posing technology-based questions to his grandparents.

Let us look at the questions asked.

Grandad was asked this:

"Grand dad did you breathe before air cons were invented?

Was it hard staying alive without modern inventions?"

Then a question was also directed at Grandma:

"Grandma weren't you flustered as you fluttered with paper fans?"

Both of them were then asked how they could communicate without modern gadgets:

"Could you communicate before faxes and long distance calls became basic amenities?"

Let us digest this a little bit.

Grandad certainly could breathe without air conditioners. There was always the electric fan and before that rich men have servants who operated large fan-like contraptions at the side or suspended from above to cool the air around their masters. Then, there is always louvered-architecture for efficient aeration of homes. As for the air outside the home, it was always a delight to walk in the cool unpolluted air.On modern inventions, it could possibly include what the child was aware then ranging from cars, radios, tape-recorders, televisions, fridges to water heaters.

As for Grandma, the same argument would apply for the fan. Sometimes, ladies like to fan themselves as a matter of style. It makes them dainty in a way. Then there are the other fashioned-oriented ladies who want to add a fan as a touch of class for sheer vanity!

True, they would likely communicate with snail mail and also the telex, not forgetting morse-code.

Now, let us look at the second stanza.

The grandparents replies.

They have this to say in retort.

"Grandchild we lived before your age.Because of our ignorance we did not know pollution, stress, traffic jams, destruction of forests, streams and hills. We feared God and nature. Now nature fears you and money is your new God".

Old 'Car'
Reflect!

The grandparents are not answering the child's  questions. They are telling that innocent child about the price that humanity has to pay for modernisation. They are telling about the ill-effects of technology. They are talking about poor traffic management. They are telling about wanton governments who robbed their respective nations of natural forest cover because of greed and corruption. They are telling about poor pollution control over industry and factories.

Humanity has always feared God, no doubt about it. Nature as well. Look at the tsunami that led to the Fukushima meltdown. I agree fully that in the earliest days of man, they do fear and pay homage to the elements such as lightnings, thunders;even huge wild animals.

With the in-depth understanding of modern science, they do not hold them as Gods anymore. However, the world community still try their best to protect Mother Earth and try to delimit the undoings of rogue governments.

Is money the new God? No, it has always been God down the generations. People are God-fearing. We fear the unknown!

Perhaps people have gotten more greedy or more desperate as they sought for money to maintain their standard of living or they work hard for the money to put food on the table as inflation rears its ugly head. They do it out of necessity.

Solitary poet?
I think in this poem, the grandparents have failed to answer the child.

That disturbs me.

I think there is a lapse somewhere in this poem, Mr Poet!

The Blame Game-Mr Nobody is Murphy

Mr Nobody is Murphy....

True, I grant you this.

"Mr Nobody" is one nursery rhyme that we learned in Standard 1 or 2 in the past.

Even the kindee could have used it to teach the kids English at an early age then.

The question that needs to be asked is why such a poem is used in Lower Secondary School? Do we need to change our curriculum evaluators or overhaul the panel that approved this poem for study? Or is our level of English this low now?

Be that as it may, putting the students through this poem  must have been one big mockery. It is as good as teaching them Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star or London Bridge is Falling Down. What a laugh!

I wonder what is the real intent of teaching Mr. Nobody to a secondary kid. The only message is that this is a blame game and no one will own up to what they have done. Perhaps it reflects the adult society where no one will to take the blame for something that has gone wrong. They will twist and turn and blame others if  they need a scapegoat.

Anyway, let us look for some  redeeming aspects of this poem, if any.

Firstly, this poem has become too folksy as no one even know who the real poet is.

Secondly, conjuring a funny little man that can be held responsible for all the commissions and omissions is certainly interesting and fun for the kids.

I guess adults do conjure up excuses to their failings such as the lack of experience, skill-sets,office politics, poor language skills, lack of funds, lack of personnel, poor equipment and Murphy's Law for  their low productivity, poor results, fumbles and failure to meet key performance indicators.

So, if ever I want to give a name to Mr. Nobody, it will have to be Mr. Murphy!

A Fighter's Lines-Marzuki Ali

Hollow Sacrifice
Patriotic melancholia; that is in a nutshell, the prose of a poem called A Fighter's Lines.

The persona is now old and wheel-chair bound.

He reflects.

He saw how he fought for independence. Was it against the Japanese or the communists?

He must be wounded because he is suffering in bitterness. His valour goes unrewarded.

Today, confronting a changing world, he knew there is no longer any fight  left in him.

He watches as deceit spreads all around to envelop the country that its independence he might have fought for.

He seeks the next generation to have the same kind of commitment and  bravery to rid the country of the 'deceit' be it corruption or racism. Will they do it patriotically as the world has changed when  global economics rule the world.

This is one dark tale of a soldier's patriotic melancholia. There will be no reprieve.

Leisure-If Only We All Could

Leisure

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.
This poem of 7 rhyming couplets is truly pastoral.

William Henry Davies writes ever fluidly  as he focused on the need for leisure while not forgetting sustainable living.

If you should just work, work and work....

If Atlas-like you carry the world on your tired shoulders....

If you do not stop to smell the roses along the way....

Then yours if a life that is sad, sad, sad. You will become but a passenger of the world; all tired and tied to the burdens of the world; to your obligations.

Even  in the Bible, Jesus has advised that we let tomorrow take care of itself. After all even the birds find sustenance in the Lord's world; why not the Children of God?

I like the pastoral catchwords such as boughs, sheep and cows, the woods, the squirrels and their nuts and the glistening streams.

The lessons to be learnt. Know how to appreciate God and the wonders of this world.

Take time to appreciate beauty.

Savour the moment of joy as a lady's mouth turned into a lovely smile.

Looks at her eyes as she beckons you to come hither.

Look into her eyes and fell in love

Treasure the spring of life and the dance of joy.

True, a poor life, if you do not see the world and the beauty that it has to give.

Heir Conditoning-Different Challenges

The Author
M Sanmughalingam's Heir Conditioning must be looked in the proper perspective so that we know there is just no comparison between the two generations. There should never be, not even with poetic licence.

Written more as a prose in a poem format, this piece has a child questioning the grandparents about how they could possibly survived without modern comforts and conveniences.

As each era has its new knowledge database, innovations, inventions and discoveries, there is advancement. From the wheel to the motor-car engine and the airplane, there have been tremendous progress for mankind.

For the current era, the telephone, the fax machine and now the wundebar internet has open new vistas into the new uncharted world for man to reach out further and find insights he never knew existed on this earth, not to speak of remote interplanetary travel or the fictitious time machine.

The poet's' limited reference' to age-old inventions,  innovation devices such as the fan, the telephone  and the ubiquitous air-condition is considered dull on all counts by the Generation Y people with their ipod, i-pads and the much sought after tablets. Can they relate with such products or issues?

The questions asked by the child are most mundane. Hardly inspiring. Out of time.

The second stanza where the grandparents tried to explain away to the child about the lack of science and technology during their earlier life-time can also be viewed as possibly begrudging the modern generation.

To accept a  mundane life devoid  of technology comfort is understandable. To blame the younger generation for the ills of modernization is most unfair especially when capitalism and greedy governments rob the land blind for their own aggrandizement and glory. That is sadly replaced.

Anyway for a scholarly work, it has passed muster.
