Playing Dunking Doughnuts!

It looks like there is a pandemic disease on Bursa KL. It must have got so bad that many counters are taken private.

YTL Cement is gone.

Proton and Esso are already going through the process of delisting.

First to go on the block lately was UAC. Citing reasons that it is hardly been traded, the Boustead Group are taking it private.

Today, I read that YHS(M) is also being privatised.

I think there are many more  in the pipeline which will go in that direction

YTL Corp:Rewarding Shareholders

I knew it will happen as YTL Corp  kept on buying Treasury shares. So yesterday, they announced a redistribution of the Treasury shares where one share in distributed in specie to shareholders for very 15 units  they held. YTL Corp closed up 7 sen at RM1.89 this evening.

A true bonanza and with a discounted sale of YTL Power warrants  in its holdings to YTL Corp shareholders.at a steep 53% discount to boot. So, a YTL Corp shareholder can now  avail himself to these warrants at only 20 sen each instead of the market price of 43 sen.

YTL Corp has a cash hoard of RM14 billion currently and is apparently looking out for mergers and acquisitions as these are now on offer at more reasonable prices. According to Francis Yeoh there are malls in China and Australia worth looking at. To him, any opportunities with 7-10% yield is worth evaluating for a buy.

At InvestMalaysia yesterday, Francis denied he will sell any of its assets under the Group. No way will he sell Wessex as it is a top world company. Currently, 85% of YTL Corp's revenue and profits are from overseas.

YTL's earnings rose 16.9% to RM364.82 million in the third quarter ended March 31, 2012 from RM312.05 in the preceding year. Revenue rose 23.5% to RM5.24 billion from RM4.24 billion

So, are you buying any more YTL Corp shares to get the 'goodies'?

Jessica and Phillip- A Winning Duo

As the fanfare fades, and the American Idols contestants leave for their summer tour, we are left to ponder.

Would be have mattered if Jessica had won and Phillips were runner-up?

So, Phillips have wowed the crowd at the Nokia Theater and his last number has  brought the trophy home for him.

After revisiting all the performances and the songs he sung on the competition, I think he is definitely deserving to be in the finale. That he won was just plain good luck and perhaps some sympathy votes for his kidney condition.

For Jessica, she may not have won the bragging rights to be the American Idol title but I love her maturity of humility in the face of defeat. Her attitude was right and she has won many a heart.

We do not know the trajectory for Jessica in her future music career but I know she has the talent to make it BIG!

She is dynamite!

So, Bebe Chez perform on the world stages, grow up prettily  and sell records the whole world over.

Love is in the air and your fans love and adore you.

Peace, love and happiness to you always.

Jessica Sanchez: You Only Live Twice

So sings Nancy Sinatra- One life for yourself and one for your dreams.

So it is sweet dreams to Jessica as the title fell from her grasp.

Jessica lost the crown to Phillip Phillips.

I think the victory was well earned by Phillip  though he appears to square off with Jessica in two numbers . His last song 'Home' especially the presentation part with boys marching in with kettle drums  was pizza cheesy overdone as if it appeared from a scene  of the Oompa Loopa people parading right out  from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Well, that is how Americans have voted and they will have to live and love that outcome.

For American Idol, I think their voting  in another guy with a guitar will spell the end of the excitement that thrills when Kellie Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks won the competition

For, Jessica it is time to move on to bigger and larger things.

On the Cusp of Victory-Jessica versus Phillips

The AI Finale-An Even Match

As I have said before, there is no comparing two budding stars especially if their styles are diametrically different and there inherently  lies the major flaw of the American Idol format.

What American Idol is doing is to present two really good performers and let the fickle American voting public have their way. Sadly, Randy's reminder that the show was to demonstrate singing talent will be lost tonight amongst the heady voting public of the USA.

By tomorrow, we will know whether another 'White Man with a Guitar' wins or the more passion-evoking budding songstress takes home the AI crown.

Let us look at the performances of Jessica Sanchez.

She sang the first song, “I Have Nothing”, selected by Simon Fuller. Did she do Whitney proud.? Oh, yes, I think so. So, a plus from me here.

Then she reprised a self-chosen “My Prayer”, as usual singing it faultlessly. The Italians would be curling their toes! Mama mia again to Jessica in this round from yours truly.

The final song Jessica chose would be the one to launch her maiden album if she wins this competition.

She sang “Change Nothing” to the wows of the crowd  at the Nokia Theater though the judges had mixed opinions.

The saving grace was given by Randy who said that Jessica brought life to the song.

I thought this is still very good.

As for Phillips, Simon Fuller chose the nostalgic oldie by Ben E. King, “Stand By Me”. I would say it was good but there was a distinct lack of soulful passion in his delivery. Really so-so to me

So what is the judgment on Round 1?

While Randy said he favours Jessica in this opening round, Jennifer called it the ‘battle of opposites’, lamenting that Americans will have one tough job to chose here.

For Round 2, Phillips chose Billy Joel’s “ Moving Out” against ‘The Prayer’ by Jessica.

Steven Tyler said, "Jessica took this round again," but Jennifer dissented, saying the round was definitely Phillip’s. Randy side-stepped by saying it was a ‘dead heat’ round and gave it ‘an even'.

For round 3, all the judges seems unhappy with Jessica especially her choice of song.  She sang  "Change Nothing". However, Randy was man enough to say positively that  Jessica ‘made something more out of the song’ and  "brought the song to life."

Jennifer Lopez obviously did not know what she was commenting, very equivocal, saying she
was surprised at the pop song choice by Jessica though she could see Jessica gaining enormous success in this genre commercially and not know the reason why. Very convoluted, coming from you, senora!

Phillip's original song and his thrid song choice was called "Home" which he felt real at home performing. Very cheesy performance fit for a snack commercial. Randy loved it calling it brilliant while Steven (as is always in his element) gave it his thumbs up.

So, now that the phone lines are abuzzing for the nest four hours or so, and American voters at texting and voting on-line as well to determine who will be American Idol for the 11 Season, what are your views on watching  all the 3 performances by both contestants?

For me, I give my vote to that sweet sixteen because of the passion that she sings all three songs at the finale. Certainly world class and destined for even bigger global success.

For Phillip, good show especially with that final marching number taking the show to a close. As his singing is limited to certain genre of songs, he does not emanate ‘exciting electrical bites’ in the air. Except for his soulful rendition the folksy way, which can gets boring, I think he will be the runner up.

Anyway, one never knows whether Americans will vote in an angel of song or a wild turkey this time around! Just look at the voting after 2008 and you would know what I mean.

Some voters can be real rednecks, mind you.

And that could be upsetting, right? Jessica?

Let us wait for the popular vote now.

Jessica Sanchez: Steeling for the Showdown

Yes, it wells up in you, doesn't it.?

All that anxiety thumping in your heart as the hour ticks closely by.

Take deep breaths and, and with rosary beads in hand, pray to Almighty God for victory in the AI  challenge,Jessica.

Bruce Lee, The Big Boss

In 1971, he was the wonder kid of Hong Kong, bringing Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest production house to face off, neck to neck, with Chinese filmdom's moghuls, Shaw Brothers.

The Big Boss was a milestone of a movie that launches the big screen career of Bruce Lee, after his side-kick role as Kato in the TV series The Green Hornet.

Nail biting action and some to the ludicrous, especially the villain crashing into a wall leaving a body outline must be real funny to us then.

As usual, it was blood works to the end until Bruce Lee's persona was apprehended after so much carnage and bloodshed.

As the One-Armed Swordsman and Dragon Inn were benchmark blockbuster movies, so was The  Big Boss  as it brought fame to the late Bruce Lee. Maria Yi Yi starred as eye candy and there was also a guest appearance by Cora Miao as a hawker by the roadside, teased and bullied by the thugs.

A refreshing plot  location somewhere in Thailand is one of the positive aspect of bringing home the truth behind the saying that " where there is water, there are Chinese".

A good re-visit for a  hard-core Bruce Lee fan that I am.

Of Kidney Stones,Social Media, National Flags and the Marines

The last time we heard was Jessica coming back from home with a sore-throat.

The latest we heard is that Phillip Phillips is not well, apparently suffering from nasty kidney stones that begs an operation which he will do after the American Idol finale.

Then we have this creature called the social media. A compendium of internet interfaces ranging from You-tube,Facebook to Twitter, and they are very powerful and can sway easily public opinions and expand fan base.

As Jessica is busy twitting until her laptop battery conked out, Phillip is taking it easy and resting to dull away the pain in his kidneys.

So let us go to some forecasts on who will pip who.

To me, both singers are not in the same field. They are like night and day.Oil and water.

While Phillip is coy and amusing with his singing and strumming style, optically he loses to Jessica who is young, fresh, pretty, demurred, dainty, almost always impeccably well-dressed and a constant joy to listen to when she belts out her ballads ever so beautifully. Phillip, on the other hand, is ill at ease, likes drab garbs so that he can slink away and blend into the crowd. Without his 'security blanket' of a guitar, he unabashedly strummed his thigh instead in nervous fashion when he sang, We've Got Tonight.

As for the social media and the internet polls that have mushroomed overnight to elicit responses from web crawlers, early indications are Phillips is getting way ahead of Jessica. As we near the one day to finale hour, a game changer may be in place as Twitter followings have spiked for Jessica which can be an indication of more support; perhaps from Hollie and Joshua supporters and fans. This will be the crucial last mile,my friends.

Also demographics can play a role in the determination of who takes back the AI crown this time around.

As much as we want to stay away from the bias of ethnicity,it will play its dark role, positively or negatively in the finale vote tally. To me, apart from bad song choice by Iovine, Joshua would still have to go home because American Idol is more than a singing contest. As it can be multi-factorial, it can also be templated. Block voting is imminent when you come into the home stretch. Joshua's support base will likely be the African Americans, the music art people and those Caucasians who are liberal enough to vote in a chap like Obama for President. And mind you, standing ovations from the judges don't count!

As for Phillip Phillips, he is a wonderful singer but can he beat unbridled block voting? Can he challenge the power of the social media and networking? I surmised that he will have an expanded voter base collecting incremental fall-outs from Elise and Joshua's fan base and possibly some new converts. Will this be enough for him to garner that critical 50+1 vote to be the first to pass the post? Will his kidney stones play him out as his medication parched his mouth?

Interestingly, Jessica Sanchez may lose out on that one aspect of ethnicity too. She is considered more a Filipino than a Mexican or an American. However, this very Achilles heel can be a source of voting power for this sweet sixteen. Now, besides those boys who like her fresh Asian looks, humility and composure, there are also full bloodied American girls who are rooting for her just to break that never-seems-to-end "white man with guitar syndrome". Phillip Phillips will continue this syndrome if he wins the 11th season of AI.

So coming back to Jessica, her ethnic roots may just be her forte as now the combined force of the whole Spanish American speaking communities from Puerto Ricans, Central Americans to Mexicans will be rooting and voting for her. With some many national flags literally flying for her; there will be a gale-like wind pushing her forward towards the finishing line.

Let us not forget that Jessica spent most of her 16 years with the American marine corps. If she can find traction with the armed forces, she can sing the national anthem for them once more as passionately as possible if she trounced Phillip Phillips big time.

So, in less than than two days, the battle royale will be engaged once more. Who will follow Joshua Ledet who would rather go blind and went home without the crown?

So, before I wrap up, who will be the last one standing? Jessica as Steven Tyler desires so; or Phillip Phillips who has a crazy following of young hormone raging American girls begging him for more and more?

Losing Donna Summer-Real Bad!

Quick on the heels of the loss of Whitney Huston, we now lose Donna Summer, a doyen of pop music that set the mood for the pulsating era of the disco 70’s to Heaven’s door.

A Grammy winner and global record seller, Summers passed on from cancer on Thursday May 17, 2012.

Gloria Gaynor, disco's other great diva, said Summer "forever changed ... how America danced and enjoyed themselves. She may have had her Last Dance here on earth, but Heaven Knows it is dancing with joy for her arrival."

The famed Liza Minelli said, "We will be dancing to her music forever," and record producer Quincy Jones said her voice was "the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade."

Born LaDonna Gaines in Boston, she made her debut as a church singer at age 10 and began her professional career in Germany at the age of 18, performing in the shows Hair and Porgy and Bess and working as a studio session singer.

But it wasn't until 1975 that she found fame with the breathy vocals and grinding beat of Love to Love You Baby. The song was a huge hit in American and European nightclubs even though its overt sexuality made it controversial.

Summer told Billboard magazine in a 2008 interview that she wasn't originally planning on singing that song herself.

"It was kind of a work in progress, and I thought that if I could get the right singer, it could be a hit. I had given Giorgio Moroder, the producer, the idea of Love to Love You Baby, and he went into the studio and put a track to the idea and I went in and sang some words over it," she said.

"I didn't need a lot of words, so I oohed and aahed my way through it. I was imagining if Marilyn Monroe sang the song, that's what she would do," Summer told Billboard.

Summer followed up with a string of other disco tunes in the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, including Last Dance, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, I Feel Love and her cover version of the ballad MacArthur Park, which was her first No. 1 record in the United States in 1978.

Barbra Streisand, who recorded the 1979 duet No More Tears (Enough is Enough) with Summer said on Thursday, "She had an amazing voice and was so talented...It's so sad."

In 1983, Summer scored a massive hit with She Works Hard for the Money, as she sought to branch out of the disco genre.

Throughout her career, Summer had 32 hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including four No. 1s.

Summer's recording success declined in the 1990s, after she embraced Christianity and released songs like I Believe in Jesus. But her last studio album, Crayons in 2008, produced three dance club hits with I'm a Fire, Stamp Your Feet and Fame.

In 2009, Summer sang at the Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway in 2009 in honor of Nobel laureate U.S. President Barack Obama.

She also made guest appearances in the last three years on TV shows America's Got Talent and Platinum Hit.

Her most recent hit was the 2010 single To Paris With Love.

We will all missed her badly.

Here, watch some of her videos. Do not miss the one where she appeared on Oraph and sang to the audience in sheer abandonment.

Jessica Sanchez-First American Filipina Vies for American Idol

I produce verbatim Rowena Joy's A Sanchez article on Jessica Sanchez becaue it is a good write-up on the AI personality.

Here goes.

May 18, 2012, 2:48pm

Will Jessica be the last person standing on the 'Idol' stage as judge Steven Tyler predicted? (Photo from Michael Becker/FOX)
MANILA, Philippines – When Jessica Sanchez sang the powerhouse classic “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” on “American Idol” last week, she apparently meant it.

In the highly-anticipated results show held Thursday (US time), Jessica was announced as one of the top 2 contestants, thus becoming the first-ever half-Filipina to reach the finale of the hit US singing search.

The 16-year-old Jessica, who also has Mexican roots, will go head-to-head with heartthrob rocker Phillip Phillips. Joshua Ledet, a perceived frontrunner who holds the record for the most number of standing ovations received from the “Idol” judges, was sent home after receiving the fewest number of votes from the 90 million ones cast.

Some Jessica fans were worried that she would not make it to the finale, as some write-ups deemed that the petite diva was in danger after supposedly failing to deliver momentous performances during the Top 3 show—aired in the US on May 16—notwithstanding the generally positive reviews she got from the judges.

She was also the sole contestant who did not receive a unanimous standing ovation from the judges (she got one courtesy of Steven Tyler after her performance of the Aerosmith smash hit, “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”).

Before the revelation of the final two contestants, “AI” mentor Jimmy Iovine shared his views about how the three contestants fared in their performances. For Jessica, the ace record producer felt that her take on Mariah Carey’s “My All” (judge Jennifer Lopez’s choice) wasn’t enough to secure her victory, as with her personal choice, “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.” As for his choice, Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There,” Jimmy realized that Jessica had to sing both Michael and Jermaine’s parts which might not have done her a favor.

In order for Jessica to win, Jimmy said that she “has to have the most magical moment she’s had so far,” wisely choosing songs that would help her achieve so. He also said, “Jessica's worthy of singing on the Grammys.”

As their “Idol” journey nears its culmination, Jessica summed up what the whole process means to her.

“This means everything! I’ve so much fun and that’s what I told myself today, I mean, I’m in the Top 3. It’s nerve-wracking, we’re fighting for the Top 2 but it’s like I should enjoy my moment right now. I just got home from San Diego from the most supportive group, I picked really difficult songs but I’m still here to fight for it. I’m going up against these guys, so that must prove something. It’s just been an amazing ride and whatever happens, happens,” the San Diego, California native told Fox All Access after the Top 3 performances.

If she bags the “Idol” crown, Jessica will be the first female winner in five years, after Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks. The succeeding seasons saw the WGWGs (white guys with guitar) earning the coveted spot: David Cook (Season 7), Kris Allen (Season 8), Lee DeWyze (Season 9), and Scotty McCreery (Season 10).

Jessica was nearly eliminated more than a month ago after receiving the least number of votes during the Top 7 week. The judges, apparently without second thoughts, unanimously gave her the sole save of the season.

Prior to Jessica, Fil-Am Jasmine Trias made it to the Top 3 of “American Idol” Season 3. Other “Idol” finalists with Filipino blood include Camile Velasco (Top 9, Season 3), Ramiele Malubay (Top 9, Season 7), and Thia Megia (Top 11, Season 10).

“American Idol” Season 11 finale takes place on May 23.

Sweet Sixteen Versus Guitar Man

Yes, prayers have been answered. The news that Jessica entered into the finale truly made my day! What a relief! God Bless Bebe Chez!

We also thank the judges for using that crucial save and possessing foresight and confidence in Jessica to go the full distance. Certainly not misplaced! Imagine, official results show Jessica garnering almost 80 million votes out of 90 million votes;with the rest divided between Philips and Ledet [in the most lopsided voting ever in American Idol history.]

So tonight, America's leading pop princess, Jessica Sanchez has wiped the competition to take the coveted first spot at the AI finale on 23 May. If it had been a marathon race, Jessica would have touch the winning tape while Phillips would still be outside the staduim somewhere. Good show,Jessica! Way to go! God sure loves ya!

[Interestingly, Ryan announced that Jessica was safe before Philips and Joshua taking away all the anxieties from Jessica's fans leaving the two male contestants to battle out for the other spot.]

As for Phillip Phillips' fans, he came in too leaving Joshua Ledet in the cold to go home as Number 3. All the best to Joshua!

For me, all three are winners though commercially Jessica is destined for phenomenal success at such a tender age and with vocals and appeal to boot.

I prefer her to the guitar playing wizard anyday!

A Prayer for Jessica

I think a very big proportion of humankind is rooting for Jessica Sanchez to get into the final of the eleventh season of American Idol. I sure am. I am rooting for her!

We stumped for her because she is great. We want her to win because we know that she will go to the next level professionally with this bragging title under her belt.

We want the Americans to support her not because she is a Mexican Filipina American but because she is American and one with talent to boot. Period.

We want voters to phone in their support because she is an underdog performing with a sore-throat and with a poor song selection provided by both judges and Jimmy Iovine. What a week!

As the midnight hour approaches, we pray for God's deliverance for Jessica to enter into the final play off of American Idol.

It's already morning in America if you go by Jessica's Twitter.

Support her.

AI-The Eleventh Hour of the 11th Season

Three horse race and it is now over as the voters takes over.

By morning tomorrow, we will know who has come in and who will go home as No.3.

Let us look at the judges response and reactions.

They seems to favour the vocalists rather then the wholesome entertainers.

First stop-Joshua Ledet. Top cat here;very strong vocals and backed by hymnal chorus most of the time.

Can he win? Yes, he will come in on the home stretch.

Phillip Phillips did an okay performance. Two good ones and one without the pow factor so it seems. Looks likely to go home.

Jessica Sanchez fighting a homecoming dose of sore-throat battled it out with two good ones and a so-so Michael Jackson number, I'll Be There. While Jennifer and Steven were supportive, Randy did not show any positive response to this third number.

Overall, if judges comments are to be accepted, it will be a Joshua-Jessica battle it out.

If voting pattern can dissent, it is likely to be the same as I would assume Phillip's voting base would only increase incrementally and Jessica's may go ballistic!

So, let us see what the final results are.

The Sensational Sanchez Homecoming

It is unbelievable!

The way they welcomed their pop princess back is sensational to say the least.

She is definitely a singing sensational that has won the hearts of all those Spanish speaking people including the armed forces like the Marines. Listen to her sing the National Anthem!

If the uproarious celebration for Jessica is to be the indicator, she is the hot favourite to win this season's American Idol.

Boutique Hotels are Getting Popular

My Home Hotel, SS2

There was a time when you either have to go very up-market or very down-market if you want hotel accommodation. The upmarket is now almost entirely an enclave for the very rich as their star ratings have propelled them to big bucks, denying the common man of ever thinking of spending a night at one of them.

Alamanda Hotel, Petaling Street

Then, came the Bed and Breakfast hotels-they are cheap but hardly good and appears to be a haunt for back-packers, mostly from the continent.

Now, we have the boutique hotels, affordable and well located.

Hotel JJ,SS2

Mostly carved out from three-storeyed shop-houses in prime locations with easy access to food and transportation, they are mushrooming in Malaysia.Their rates from RM60 to less than RM200 is a welcome come-uppance to many, particularly sales personnel that needs to stay for short stints to do canvassing for their goods and services.

I-Hotel, Kota Damansara

By and large, they are clean though some come without windows and expect the noise to be many decibels higher.

So, next time when you come to Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur, remember there is affordable hotel accommodation in boutique hotels.

Great Marine Movie

Heartbreak Ridge is one movie that displays the machodom of the US Marine Corps.

As usual, expect Clint Eastwood to be a hard-hitting;jaw breaking Gunnery Sergeant that will whip his outfit into a lean fighting force when they have to mount an amphibious operation to save Americans stuck in Grenada during a civil upheaval.

Heartbreak Ridge is derived from the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge Bridge in Korea during the Korean War.

The protagonist love for the marines has caused a rift in his marriage to Aggie played by Marsha Mason whom he is trying to win back before she accept the proposal from another. That he succeeded ,makes it a feel good movie.

As usual, it was fun while it lasted and I enjoyed every bit of this movie.

Bloody Organs Transfers

I missed this movie in the circuit.

Another of the Eastwood movies, Bloodwork is grippy and its twists and turns can baffle you as the protagonist seek out a serial murder only to find that the dastardly chap is his neighbouring marina boat-mate.

The premise of a cat and mouse between the protagonist and the antagonist whereby the antagonist kept the protagonist alive by providing him a heart transplant that is suitable with his rare blood type makes an interesting plot.

Wanda de Jesus, a Cher look-alike, provides the eye-candy in this movie while Jeff Daniels played the unlikely villain.

Very watchable movie.

Supermax Corporation Continues to Max For You!

It may not be the Optimus Prime of the Malaysian rubber glove industry, but it have hit the RM billion mark revenue target in 2011 and may soon catch up on Top Glove if the latter becomes lackadaisical.

One of the popular counters, Supermax has seen great heights in years gone by and may be on a plateau right now given the rising latex prices that may impact negatively upon its sales and revenue.

Let us review their 11-year profile for a purchase of 10,000 shares at RM2 in 2000.

As of February 2012, given the corporate restructurings that have taken place during this period, your investment of RM20,000 would have ballooned up in value to RM160,830. On top of that, you would have received accumulated dividends of RM15,819.

Your capital gain would be RM156,650 and your net returns would be 783%.

Don't you think you have made a smart investment by just investing in rubber gloves?

Fast forward,do you think Stanley Thai can bring this company further up the profit path to new heights or has the company 'hit the wall' in its growth trajectory?

After it ex-bonused on 1:1, the share price has declined to the RM1.90 level, in tandem with poor market sentiments and the rising latex prices.

To prop the price of the counter up needs more aggressive marketing and perhaps some health exigencies.

Meanwhile, this is a good price to buy into this dividend paying company.
